Garden Glory
Our garden started to spring into life midway through March when we finally had a let up in the wet weather of winter and it has been such a joy to see the flowers bursting into life ever since. Having a garden means that we can always get outside when the weather is good. A few years ago, Andy built a lean-to on my studio in the summer house at the end of the garden so that we can even sit out when the weather isn’t great. My favourite thing this time of year is getting all the annual pots ready. We probably have too many as they can be a real pain to keep watered in the heat of the summer, but I love the colour and inspiration they provide when all the flowers are blooming! We try our hardest to over-winter as much as we can so that we don’t have to start completely afresh with the pot planting every springtime and I often plant herbs amongst the flowers to add to the foliage and fragrance. If you haven’t got a garden then windowsills and tabletops can be the perfect place to indulge in a little spot of gardening, with tomatoes, peppers and herbs perfectly happy to grow in a sunny spot. My Dad is a dab hand at growing tomatoes from seeds and peppers will grow that way too, so you can save a few when you are doing your food prep and get some plants growing. If you don’t have access to an outdoor space and don’t fancy creating an indoor version, as you’re not the green fingered type, then how about making your own crochet versions. I can heartily recommend patterns by the wonderful Emma Varnam who is the undoubted queen of crochet succulents and house plants.
